The Seychelles Nurses and Midwives Council is the statutory body that regulates the practice, education and training of nurses and midwives to protect the public from unsafe nursing and midwifery practices in the country. It is the functioning arm of the Nurses and Midwives Act, 1985 and Nurses and Midwives Regulation, 1989.

The origin of the regulation of the nursing and midwifery professions in Seychelles took place since 1926, when nurses were first registered.  This prompted the passing of the Nurses and midwifery ordinance, 1929. This ordinance was revoked and repealed by the Nurses ordinance, 1950 and The Midwives ordinance, 1950. In 1985, the Seychelles Nurses and Midwifery Act repealed the Ordinances followed by the Nurses and Midwives Regulations, 1989. Before the Act 1985, the regulatory body was operated as a board with members being nursing and medical services administrators.

The board was replaced with the council in 1985.  Back then, nurses were seconded on part time basis to register newly qualified nurses and midwives. It was in 2007, that a nurse/midwife was appointed as a full time Registrar to register nurses and midwives along other many duties and responsibilities depicted by the Nurses and Midwives Act, 1985.
