Guidelines for reporting on unsafe Nursing and Midwifery practices:

  1. Write a clear description of situation you think you should report.
  2. Make sure that your statement is accurate.
  3. Make sure you are credible.
  4. Obtain support from at least one trustworthy person before filling a report.
  5. Inform your immediate supervisor.
  6. Assume responsibility for reporting the individual by being open about it. Write and sign your name to the letter.
  7. See problem through once you have reported it.

The Nurses and Midwives Council is the statutory body regulating the practice of Nursing and Midwifery in Seychelles.  It has as one of its main responsibilities to promote the public’s right to quality of Nursing and Midwifery care.  In the event that there is alleged breach of professional standards brought to the Council in writing against any registered Nurse / Midwife, the Registrar, if satisfied that the complaint is made in good faith shall invite (Nurse / Midwife) called the respondent to furnish any written statement or explanation which he / she may desire to offer.

The Council if satisfied that a prima facie case for investigation has been established shall notify the respondent and shall lay the matter before the investigating committee.  The Council is guided under the Nurses and Midwives Regulation, 1989, Caps 150, Section 17, 18 and 19 to implement this function.  The investigation is carried out similar to procedure in the court of Law.  Based on evidence collected, the Council decides whether to pursue a charge or dismiss the allegations that the member committed any acts of misconduct or is incompetent.

The Council would like to remind each individual Nurse / Midwife as well as employers of Nurses / Midwives to direct complaints regarding professional issues to the Registrar, Nurses and Midwives Council.  This applies to all environments where registered Nurses and Midwives are practising, which can be either private or governmental sectors.
